What is CAT?

A

CAT  = Center for Arts and Technology- offers half day programs at the Brandywine and Pickering Campuses in vocational and technical studies. Students attend CAT for half day and DHS for the other half-day.  For information or an application about this half-day program, see your guidance counselor, or refer to the Center for Arts and Technology website.

Q

How do I know whether to take Software Applications or Advanced Software Applications?

A

Eighth graders who have an A in Computer Applications and who have superior skills in computer applications software, and who have recommendation from their eighth grade Computer Applications teacher, may consider taking the Advanced course.  Talk with your eighth grade Computer Applications teacher to see if this course is suited for you.

Students in the Classes of ‘08 and ‘09 may elect either Software Applications (.5 credit) OR Life & Careers (.5 credit) to meet the new requirements.

What are the timelines for course selection?

A

*        January 30 – February 2 - Course selection forms given to current 9th, 10th and 11th grade students.

*        February 1 – Teacher Recommendation Day for course selection

*        Beginning February 5 through February 14 students may submit electronic requests at the following website: http://grades.dasd.org/selection

*        February 4th – Course selection meeting at High School East
7:00 pm for students and parents

*        February 5th – Course selection meeting at High School West
7:00 pm for students and parents

*        February 14 – Completed course selection forms returned to homeroom teachers AND final due date for on-line selection

*        March 28 – Final date for students to make changes

Can I make changes to my course selections after the March 23rd deadline?

A

The deadline for making schedule changes is March 28th.  After this date, you may request a course change from your guidance counselor or the Assistant Principal Scheduler (Ms. Jakubczyk at East and Ms. Bell at West). Any changes after March 28th  may not be possible.

How should Special Education students with an IEP register for Study Skills classes?

A

Work one on one with your present learning support teacher to schedule the appropriate number of study skills classes?

Can I make a scheduling change after the school year has begun?

A

*        Once the school year begins, if a student is experiencing academic difficulty in a course, the following steps must be taken prior to consideration of a course change by administration.

o        Parent-Teacher conference to address concerns.

o        Teacher and student must work together.

o        Student must show evidence of making effort to improve (seeking extra help, peer tutoring, etc).

o        Parent/teacher/student/counselor conference to assess progress.

o        Administrative review and decision.
