Students in Mrs. Rebecca Desmond’s
6th period art class celebrated the 50th birthday of
America’s most popular doll, Barbie.
Barbie was introduced to the American public on March 9, 1959.
Created by Ruth and Elliott
Handler and named after their daughter Barbara, Barbie went on to become one
of America’s most popular icons. In
her first year, the company sold 300,000 of the $3.00 dolls. An original Barbie in excellent could would
sell for $27,450 today.
Student artist Katrina
Camerote has created a series of pieces incorporating the
50 year old doll into her two and 3 D images.
Katrina’s work was recently included in an AP art show at DHS
West.
